In 1886 Ladbrokes was founded by Schwind and Pendleton as commission agents. The partner’s objective was to back horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Worcestershire. In 1902 Bendir joined the partnership and officially named the company Ladbrokes after seeing a street post to Ladbrokes Hall. Bendir changed Ladbrokes’ objective from backing horses to bookmaking. In 1956 Cyril Stein and Max Parker acquired the company and immediately introduced no limit betting.

In 1961 the Government legalized betting shops under the Betting and Gaming Act. Stein bought Ladbrokes’ first shop and used profits from the traditional areas of the business to establish a chain of betting shops. Stein was the first to introduced fixed odds football betting to increase non-horseracing bets.

In 1967 Cyril Stein became chairman of Ladbrokes and floated the company on the London Stock Exchange.

In the late 80s Ladbrokes acquired a number of hotels and Texas Homecare. In 1987 the company purchased all Hilton Hotels outside the United States for £645 million.

After the establishment of the Gambling Act 2005 in the United Kingdom and the slight relaxation of advertising laws for gambling companies in 2007, a broadcast ad by Ladbrokes, that included a host of ex-professional footballers resulted in complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The campaign was cleared by ASA.
