The Dallas Cowboys are one of four teams who play in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Some people refer to the Dallas Cowboys as “America’s Team”.

Early Years of the Dallas Cowboys

Before the Dallas Cowboys could even become a team George Preston Marshall, the owner of the Washington Redskins, fought hard to keep Dallas out of the NFL. However Bedford Wynne and Clint Murchison, the sooner to-be owners of the Dallas Cowboys, bought the rights to the Washington Redskins fight song and threatened to let them play it at their football games. So, the owner of the Redskins folded and Dallas was granted their own team in 1960.

Just like any expansion team in any sport the Dallas Cowboys were horrible; they posted a record of 0-11-1. But during the 1960’s the Cowboys would pick up key players to eventually make them into a contender in the league. Their hard work paid off in the 1970 where they made it all the way to Super Bowl V, but because of mistakes they lost to the Baltimore Colts by 3 points, 16 – 13.

The Dallas Cowboys’ appearance in Super Bowl V would not be their last one in the 70s. They would appear in Super Bowl VI, XII, X, and XIII. In the 1971 season the Cowboys would return to Super Bowl VI and would this time beat the Miami Dolphins 24 – 3. A couple of the star players on the Dallas Cowboys while they were dominating the NFL were Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Drew Pearson, Ed Jones, and Harvey Martin. The Dallas Cowboys is now known as the team of the 70s.

The Dallas Cowboys in the 80’s and 90’s

After Roger Staubach retired in 1980 from the Dallas Cowboys, Danny White took over as quarterback. With White as the leader for the Cowboys they could not reach the Super Bowl in the 80’s. The Dallas Cowboys did reach the playoffs in five different seasons, but they got progressively worse. The biggest event that occurred in the 80’s for the Dallas Cowboys was a change in ownership in 1989, the team was sold to Jerry Jones.

In the early 1990’s the Dallas Cowboys were able to reload their team with quality draft picks. The new team consisted of Troy Aikman, Daryl Johnston, Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, and Mark Stepnoski to name a few. In just three years the Dallas Cowboys were able to reach the Super Bowl, their first one in 14 years. The Cowboys were able to beat the Buffalo Bills to win Super Bowl XXVII and again in Super Bowl XXVIII. The Dallas Cowboys would not make it to the Super Bowl the next year, losing to the San Francisco 49ers. The next year they were able to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.

The rest of the decade the Dallas Cowboys did not produce another championship and the days when the Cowboys dominated the league was slowly ending, but they did end up winning more games than any other team in the 1990’s.

Dallas Cowboys in the 21st Century

The Dallas Cowboys started the turn of the century with a 5 – 11 season. However in 2003 the Cowboys surprised everyone and posted a 10 – 6 record with new head coach Bill Parcells. After Parcells Wade Phillips was hired as the head coach and helped the Cowboys have their best season ever with a 13-3 record. Now still the head coach Phillips in 2009 the Dallas Cowboys have moved into a new stadium look to start a new dynasty.
