The Seattle Seahawks are a member of the National Football Conference West Division in the National Football League (NFL).  They joined the National Football League as an expansion team in 1976.

History

The National Football League awarded the city of Seattle, Washington an NFL franchise on June 4, 1974.  At the time, the commissioner of the National Football League was Pete Rozelle.  The Nordstrom family  were the majority owners of the original Seattle Seahawks.  On March 30-31, 1976, Seattle and the other expansion team, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, participated in the expansion draft.  Both teams alternated picks selecting unprotected players from the existing 26 National Football League teams.  The Seahawks began playing in the National Football Conference (NFC), however after one season, transferred to the American Football Conference (AFC).   In 2002, the Seahawks returned to National Football Conference (NFC) to be a member of the West division.

The Seahawks won the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division in 1998 and 1999.  They won the National Football Conference (NFC) West Division in 2005, 2006, and 2007.  They reached the American Football Conference (AFC) championship in 1983, and the National Football Conference (NFC) in 2005.  The Seattle Seahawks are (27-10) in playoff games.   In the mid 2000’s, the Seahawks were led by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and running back Shaun Alexander.  Walter Jones led the running attack as an offensive lineman.  2006 was Seattle’s best year, reaching Super Bowl XL to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2009 the Seattle Seahawks added a few new players to their roster.  First round  pick Aaron Curry and top 4 pick overall was drafted to assist a weak defensive performance in 2008.  Aaron Curry will join former standout at the University of California, Lofa Tutupu , at the linebacker position.  Defensive back Marcus Trufant will lead the defensive backfield.  On offense, the Seahawks acquired running back Julius Jones., former running back for the Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame.  He will be working with veteran Matt Hasselbeck in the back field.  Hasselbeck will be throwing to wide receivers Nate Burleson, deio Branch and rookie Deon Butler.  John Carleson will be playing tight end for the Seahawks.  The Seattle Seahawks will be competing against the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, and San Francisco 49ers for the National Football Conference Division title.
