Bodog was founded in 1994 by Calvin Ayre as an online gambling company based in the Caribbean country of Antigua.

In the new business model, Bodog license its name to a third party company for the rights to run those sites under the Bodog brand name to various licensees. Calvin Ayre, Bodog founder, describes the Bodog licensing model similar to Richard Branson’s Virgin-branded venture capital.
Morris Mohawk Gaming Group is BodogBrand.com's main licensee, which runs Bodog.com, the online gambling services within the United States. Morris Mohawk describes the brand licensee relationship with Bodog as a franchise. Morris Mohawk is based in Kahnawake, a native reserve in Quebec, Canada, its online gaming license was granted by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.
Bodog Europe operates Bodog.co.uk in Europe and Bodog.ca in Canada. Haydock Sports operates Bodog88.com in Asia. Haydock is headquartered in Manila its remote gaming license was granted by First Cagayan in the Philippines.
In September of 2009, BodogBrand.com announced its poker online gaming brand license arrangement with Patrik Selin, former CEO of the Ongame Poker Network.

In May 2007 Bodog gain media attention with an entertainment bet on whether Heather Mills, ex-wife of Paul McCartney would lose her prosthetic leg during ABC taping of "Dancing with the Stars".
